Harmonizing Opposites: Exploring the Eighth Lunar Day with Mercury’s Wisdom

Written by Jamie Epstein

It’s Wednesday, May 1, & moon is in Capricorn, in the starspace or Nakshatra called Shraavana. Capricorn vibrates with the frequency of taking practical actions steps toward our goals, especially but not exclusively professional, toward creating a more solid container for our lives. Capricorn is ruled by the stern taskmaster Saturn, who is ever reminding us that there is only so much sand in our hourglass & that the grains keep passing through its waist regardless of how we use our time, that time waits for no one. So if we are wasting time, not taking responsibility for the forward-motion of our lives, let’s stop doing that, ok?

Shraavana, the star of deep listening, brings a lesson about getting so quiet that our power of attention moves naturally from the external to the internal, from hearing the sounds of the outside world – the chirps of birds, the honks of cars & sirens of ambulances, the rain pummeling windows, the dog barking or cat purring, the laughter of children playing – to being able to hear the sounds of our innermost world. Ram Dass said, “The next message you need is always right where you are.” Being right where we are means being fully present, getting still & drawing our precious faculties of attention in in in, so we can truly listen, receive. what message might you receive today, might be waiting for you like a letter from a secret lover in the depths of your own heart wisdom?

It’s the eighth lunar day (tithi), the eighth phase of the waning moon, when moon is half dark & half light. this tithi supports us in harmonizing opposites – darkness & light, chaos & control – & may even throw some conflict into the mix to give us the opportunity to do so!

Wednesday is ruled by mercury, who gives us the ability (to greater or lesser degrees, depending on our natal charts) to communicate. He also gives us discriminating intelligence (to greater or lesser degrees, depending), which gives us the superpower of knowing when to listen, when to talk, when to put up & when to shut up, to know when silence is a better form of communication than words.

“Sometimes the art of not saying things is just as powerful as the art of saying the right thing at the right time. sometimes what is needed is witness.” David Whyte

And that’s your daily bliss! which is a sort of lunar weather report. may it allow you to align with the day’s cosmic energy so you can find & create a little more bliss.
